Can I take my thyroid tablet with tea?

Short answer
It is better not to swallow your thyroid tablet with tea or coffee. Coffee is known to reduce how much levothyroxine your body absorbs, and tea with milk is likely to do the same, so doctors usually suggest plain water and a gap of 30 to 60 minutes before your morning cup. If that is truly impossible, keeping the same routine every day and telling your doctor matters more than perfection.
For many people in India, the day does not start until the first cup of chai. So it is natural to want to swallow the thyroid tablet with it. Unfortunately, this is one of the most common reasons a thyroid report does not settle.
Why does tea or coffee matter?
Levothyroxine is absorbed in the small intestine, and it is easily disturbed by whatever else is in the stomach. In a study of people taking levothyroxine, drinking coffee with or soon after the tablet clearly reduced how much was absorbed. Tea has been studied less, but the milk and sugar in Indian chai, and the tea itself, are likely to have a similar effect. Milk also contains calcium, which binds to the hormone.
When absorption changes from day to day, your TSH moves up and down. Your doctor may then keep adjusting the strength without solving the real problem.
How long should I wait?
Doctors usually suggest:
- swallowing the tablet with plain water on waking, and
- waiting about 30 to 60 minutes before tea, coffee, milk or breakfast.
Calcium and iron tablets need a longer gap, usually about four hours. The full routine is explained in how to take levothyroxine the right way.
What if I cannot change my routine?
Some people genuinely cannot wait, for example because of an early shift. Options your doctor may discuss include a bedtime routine, a few hours after dinner, or simply keeping exactly the same habit every day so that the absorption is at least consistent. Tell your doctor what you actually do. It helps them interpret your TSH. Please do not change the strength on your own to make up for it.
If your TSH is still high despite all this, read about an underactive thyroid, and check your latest report with the thyroid report reader.
